MOMAHAKI RACING CLUB
1888-1892
The Momahaki Racing Club has a short existence but saw plenty of action in the few years it operated. (The change of spelling to Moumahaki appears to have happened after the club folded.)
In 1888, those who liked to keep a good hack for the fun of the thing, (most of them already members of the Waverley-Waitotara Racing Club), formed themselves into a committee to hold a hack meeting on Kennedy and Hearn’s track at Waitotara. The reason for this was the Waverley-Waitotara Racing Club’s reluctance to hold have races. Hacks were essentially non-stud Book or part-thoroughbred horses that had not won an advertised race at the time of nomination – with the exception of hack and hunter races.
Nicholas Hearn and Thomas Clark waited on the secretary of the Wanganui Jockey Club (which was also the Metropolitan Club) to find out if their proposed meeting gave £100 in stakes, it might rely on getting the totalisator machine. This was agreed to.
It is not know who was president these first two years, but the secretary was the capable William Brewer, who was so active in the Waverley-Waitotara Club.
The stewards building this new club were James Kennedy, Nicholas Hearn, Alexander Strachan, William Brewer, Charles Brewer, John Morton and Thomas Clark, most of whom we have previously become acquainted with. The only members of this group not so well know to us are Scotsman Alexander Strachan and Waitotara bother Thomas Clark.
The Loch Equine
The Loch Equine breeds their eight stakes broodmares each year, selling yearlings annually through the Inglis Thoroughbred Yearling Sales and racing 7-9 city-class racehorses. The Loch Equine also works with five NSW trainers with our horses racing in Metropolitan, Provincial and Country races. Throughout all our operations at The Loch Equine, everything we do stems back to “the love of the horse”, we take great pride in the welfare and management of our small but quality team. This is the legacy of The Loch Equine.
